Top tips for hiring a car in Tuscany

  • Bear in mind, most of Italy’s motorways are run by toll systems which work on fixed charges, based on distances. Take a ticket when entering the route, then pay on exiting. Payment can be made with euros or most major credit cards; however, it is advisable to keep some loose change in your car just in case a card is not accepted. These routes can be identified by the ‘A’ prefix with white text on green signs.  Make sure to avoid the lanes marked with yellow ‘T’ s as these are only used by drivers who are using Telepass boxes.
  • Seat belts are a mandatory requirement in Italy. Always carry a licence and registration document, alongside your insurance in the vehicle. Several tunnel systems can be found when travelling in Italy through mountain passes or around major cities in Tuscany, where it is mandatory to use headlights.
  • Be aware of petrol stations opening times in Italy which are open in the mornings from around 07:00 to 12:30, and again in the afternoon from around 15:30-19:00, which comply in general with most Italian services. They are often closed on Sundays but 24-hour petrol stations can be found on most motorways if you need to refuel or refill the tank of the hire car for your return to the airport.
  • It is an essential requirement to install an appropriate seat in the vehicle if travelling with children in Italy. Fitted or booster seats are mandatory if children are under 4ft 9in, depending on their weight, with booster seats needed if larger children weigh over 48.5lbs.  Most hire companies will include seats as part of their agreement if this is arranged beforehand, so make sure to check this is an option when booking a rental car.
  • Book your rental car in Tuscany at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Mini rental cars in Tuscany are around 46% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about hiring a car in Tuscany

  • Should I hire a car in Tuscany?

Driving in the Tuscany region will give you great advantages in exploring the area more freely at one's own pace, with the ability to reach more remote places that are sometimes inaccessible without transport as public trains/buses can often be limited, or somewhat patchy in more rural locations.  This way, travellers can explore the beautiful city of Florence, the historic town of Lucca, or the surrounding Tuscan hills with lush olive groves, vineyards, or the rugged Apennine Mountain range. The Mediterranean coastal route is accessible also. Choose from wide varieties of vehicles to suit a road trip, be it something sporty to zip around coastal cliff roads, or spacious SUVs or 4x4s for a family trip, or when negotiating rougher mountain roads.

  • What is driving like in Tuscany?

Italy has good road networks, especially the Tuscany region which has well-maintained roads.  Motorways run on toll systems, but numerous dual carriageways can also be used which connect many towns. Identify the different systems by green signs as motorways, blue as the dual carriageways, with blue also for local roads.  Parking zones are also conveniently colour-coded with white as free zones, blue as paid, with yellow markings reserved for residents only.  Be aware that some cities restrict non-resident vehicles in busy tourist areas so a vehicle may need to be registered to use them. Drivers should drive on the right-hand side of the road. Remain alert to the numerous mopeds which are constant features on Italian roads.  Roads in Italy can seem more aggressive than what you are normally used to, but in general, the conditions are good. It pays to be decisive as well as assertive when behind the wheel.

  • How old do you have to be to hire a car in Tuscany?

To hire rental vehicles in Italy, 18 years of age is the minimum age requirement.  Drivers under the age of 25 may encounter surcharges when hiring vehicles. Possible restrictions on the categories may also be limited as to what can be hired. Only full valid licences are permitted. Make sure an International Permit has been acquired to comply with EU regulations. Another form of ID such as a passport is advisable. You will also need a credit card to complete the booking.
