Having your own car is the best way to explore this beautiful region of France. Having your own car is often the easiest way to reach popular attractions including Mont-Saint Michel, The Falais Castle and the D-Day Beaches. Public transport often involves multiple connections and limited daily departures. Additionally, Normandy is known for its beautiful countryside and, with your own vehicle, you can stop as often as you like while driving between towns, or take detours whenever you want. With numerous manor houses and castles, small towns and stunning natural settings, you can see everything on your own schedule by booking a Normandy car hire.
Driving in Normandy is usually very peaceful. The roads aren't usually busy, particularly between towns. If you do plan on driving in smaller towns, it may be best to hire a small car, as the city centres may not be able to accommodate larger vehicles. You will likely encounter toll roads; however, it is usually possible to avoid them if you don't mind extra travel time. Bear in mind that if you need to take a bridge across the Seine, paying a toll will likely be unavoidable. There will usually be two lanes, one that allows you to pay by card and another that is staffed and takes cash. If you aren't sure if your card will work, always take the staffed lane, so you don't get stuck.
Most Normandy car hire companies will hire cars to drivers aged 21 or older. If you or any of the drivers are between 21 and 24, a Young Driver's Surcharge is usually applied. You'll also usually need to have held your licence for at least 12 months. If you have a UK driving licence, you won't need an International Driving Permit. You may run into issues if your licence has less than six months before it expires, so you may wish to renew it before your trip.
